    WHAT IS MENTAL WELL-BEING? AND IS IT ACHIEVABLE AND SUSTAINABLE?

    Talking therapies have been around for many years and their benefits have been studied and experienced many times over.

    We talk and hear all the time about how important our physical health is and yet so rarely is the emphasis put on our mental health or wellness. In fact it is still very much a taboo subject for some, filled with fear of stigma. It is my belief that this fear is most often the result of a lack of understanding, and that those who face up to mental health and wellness issues emerge as mentally stronger individuals.

    The World Health Organisation defines mental health as:

    …a state of well-being in which the individual realises his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.

    So is there a difference between mental health and mental wellness?

    Mental Health describes a level of psychological well-being, even if the person does not have any diagnosed mental health condition. Mental health measures an individual’s ability to focus on the enjoyment of life, and create a balance between life activities and psychological resilience

    Mental Wellness is generally viewed as a positive attribute, such that a person can reach enhanced levels of mental awareness. This definition of mental wellness highlights emotional well-being, the capacity to live a full and creative life, and the flexibility to deal with life’s inevitable challenges.
