RESILIENCE by Carole Pemberton
Resilience – A Practical Guide for Coaches by Carole Pemberton is a slightly different style of book to my usual book reviews and recommendation. Primarily because it is written as an aid to coaches as opposed to a self-help style book for clients. However I figure sometimes it worth looking at a slightly different style as there is often something unexpected to learn from taking a different approach.
Resilience is certainly written for an audience of coaches, however whether you are a coach or simply interested in coaching this book might be for you. Resilience has something to offer as it covers both the ‘basic’ and standardised coaching tools such as the wheel for life and GROW model. In addition to this the book also looks at how other therapies can work in addition to coaching and what additional expertise and training is required in order to bring this combined therapies to life.
Pemberton has an accessible style of writing and use case study examples where possible to try to bring theory to life. She also includes some useful and interesting questions and questionnaires in Chapter 1 which whilst useful for clients, are also very good self-development tools for everyone.
I wouldn’t agree that this book teaches coaches about how to build and develop their own resilience, but it does share interesting tools and technique that will benefit any coaching practice.
As with all good practitioners and professionals, we should all practice what we preach and be active in continuing our own journey of self-discovery and not just focus on that of our clients as if they are somehow different to us.
So whether you are a client or coach Resilience by Carole Pemberton has something to offer you.
