THE GOOD PSYCHOPATH’S GUIDE TO SUCCESS: How to use your inner psychopath to get the most out of life by Dr Kevin Dutton and Andy McNab.

A very interesting and daring title and I have to say the book totally delivers.

The style of writing is somewhat conversational which is strange at first, but actually without it and the intermingled anecdotes, it could be quite dry.  However this book is anything but dry.  It is full of very clear explanations about how and why we think and how that might be different.  Overall the theme of the book is to look at the role that emotions play in how we respond to the world, ourselves and others.  With the example of a good psychopath (McNab) the reader gains a clear understanding of how emotions influence our thoughts processes and mean that we often don’t push ourselves to our greatest advantage.

The concept of the psychopath has often been told to be one of someone who has no empathy.  The Good Psychopath challenges this by demonstrating that it’s not about a lack of empathy, more a case of being able to switch empathy off in order to make decisions that will benefit you and help you achieve your goals more easily and clearly.  In short its about learning to recognise when your emotions are influencing you positively or negatively.  And about what changes you can make in order to ensure that you are making decisions to benefit yourself and not others, and stop you from making decisions that mean you are getting in your own way, (a common human trait).

Throughout the book Dutton and McNab explore facets of life including fear, persuasion, mindfulness and ultimately how to uncouple emotions from behaviour.  This is not a book about how to become cut throat, ruthless and selfish in the worst way.  it is a book about how to set positive boundaries where you get to think, feel and behave by being the best version of you, and not playing down your strengths and settling for second best when you authentically believe you have more to offer.

‘The good psychopath’ has become somewhat of a ‘buzz’ phrase with regards successful CEO and bankers, and whilst that may or may not be an image you wish to emulate, it doesn’t mean some of the skills they use can’t benefit you too.
