Sane New World by Ruby Wax is about Taming the Mind (as the subtitle suggests).

A few years ago, Wax became the ‘face of depression’ fronting national mental health awareness campaigns, and talking about her own experiences and battles with the debilitating disease that is depression.  For some this admission may have come as no surprise, and for others that exactly what it was – a surprise.  A successful comedian and actor, with a larger than life personality prone to life altering episodes on mania and deep depression.  Wax has on more than one occasion sort help at places such as the infamous, Priory.

Sane New World shines a light on Wax’s experiences with depression, but it is by no means an autobiography.  Wax uses this literary opportunity to explain to us the science, both psychological and physiological, behind what happens to us when in a state of depression.  She also shares with us the system and techniques that have helped her successfully manage her mania and depression ongoing – Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT).  Wax is not only qualified to talk to us form her own experiences but she is also now qualified with a Masters from Oxford in MBCT so she clearly knows what she is talking about.

MBCT teaches us how to practise mindfulness in a simple everyday way that doesn’t leave you needing to find extra hours in the day, or start trying to be someone you are not.  MBCT is about noticing, accepting, learning and being present in a positive and realistic way.

This is a reader friendly introduction to MBCT as well as a book that is filled with ‘that’s me!’ moments.
