10 QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU FEEL CONFIDENT WHEN GETTING TO KNOW SOMEONE NEW

“Getting to know you, getting to know all about you…Getting to like you, getting to hope you like me.” – song lyrics from ‘Getting to know you’ the 1951 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical: The King and I

I love these song lyrics as I feel they really sum up what the experience of getting to know someone is really like.  Who, what, where, when and even some why!

“Getting to know you, getting to know all about you?”

So how do we get to know a person? How do we know who they are, what they stand for and what they believe in? Do we just define people by what they do or how we know them; or, are there other ways we can really get to know someone that does not mean we are reliant on social and cultural stereotypes that often lead to snap judgements and prejudices.

And then we come to the second part, the part I find most interesting of all…”Getting to like you, getting to hope you like me.”

I’m going to repeat that last line for you…“…getting to hope you like me.”

When getting to know new people we are given the opportunity to get to know ourselves a bit better as well. How do we respond and react to the people we meet, what do we think about them, did we realise we had those prejudices or judgements or did we feel influenced by them?

Yes we might be interested in the other person, but are we really as interested in them as we are curious to know what they think about us!?

Below are 10 ‘getting to know you’ questions that have been collated by a number of psychologists that upon completion mean you should know more about who the person standing, or sitting, in front of you really is. But I’m not suggesting you use these questions to grill your partner with over a lazy Sunday afternoon; or print these out and carry them with you to your next dinner party function.

No.  My suggestion is to use these questions to get to know yourself. If you want to know what other people will think of you, then answer these questions about yourself and see what you think of your own answers. Are you shocked or surprised by what you have said!?! Would you recognise yourself at a dinner party from your answers? And most importantly of all…would you like you if you met you!?!

Happy discovering peeps! And remember; dial up the parts you love and like and look for new choices to change the ones that don’t make you feel altogether proud. After all, if you don’t like you, who will!
